Accelerator Based Magnetic Monopole Search Experiments (Overview)
We present an overview of accelerator-based searches for magnetic monopoles and we show why such searches are important for modern particle physics. Possible properties of monopoles are reviewed as well as experimental methods used in the search for them at accelerators. Two types of experimental methods, direct and indirect are discussed. Finally, we describe proposed magnetic monopole search ...
متن کاملDirac’s Dream—the Search for the Magnetic Monopole
I first quickly summarize the history of the Magnetic Monopole leading to the quantum theory of magnetic charge that started with a 1931 paper by Paul Dirac who showed that the existence of magnetic monopoles was consistent with Maxwell's equations only if electric charges are quantized. Next I will briefly review the status of monopole searches. Last, but not least I discuss in more detail the...
متن کاملDirac Magnetic Monopole Production from Photon Fusion in Proton Collisions
We calculate the lowest order cross–section for Dirac magnetic monopole production from photon fusion (γγ) in pp̄ collisions at √ s = 1.96 TeV, pp collisions at √ s = 14 TeV, and we compare γγ with Drell–Yan (DY) production. We find the total γγ cross–section is comparable with DY at √ s = 1.96 TeV and dominates DY by a factor > ∼ 50 at √ s = 14 TeV. We conclude that both the γγ and DY processes...
متن کاملMagnetic monopole searches in the cosmic radiation
There has been a big effort in the past twenty years with at least a couple of generations of experiments which searched for supermassive GUT magnetic monopoles in the cosmic radiation. Here a short review of these searches is given, together with a brief description of the theoretical framework and of the detection techniques.
متن کاملPossible Binding of a Magnetic Monopole to a Particle with Electric Charge and a Magnetic Dipole Moment
~ 'HIS subject was first discussed by Malkus, ' who concluded that there cannot be bound states between Dirac monopoles and naturally occurring free nuclei. I disagree with Malkus's interpretation of his results, and believe that bound states of this type with binding energies up to the GeU range are a definite possibility if monopoles exist at all. Because they involve assumptions about the pr...
متن کاملMagnetic Monopole Decay and Its Consequences
We return to further examination of the need for the existence of magnetic monopoles based on the decades old derivation [Sherman Frankel, Amer. Jour. of Physics, 44 7 683-6 1976], of both the monopole-charge force, ~ F = eg(~r × ~v/c)/r, as well as the Dirac angular momentum , ~lf = egr̂, from P and T conservation alone, without any recourse whatsoever to Maxwell’s Equations. The eg product als...
